Home Exodus Exodus 20:16

Exodus 20:16

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Exodus 20:16

Proverbs 6:19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Proverbs 14:5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

Matthew 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

In the last reference the Lord establishes the correct interpretation of “thou shalt not kill” as “thou shalt do no murder”. He could have corrected bearing false witness to thou shalt not lie if he needed to ensure a proper interpretation; which He did not do.

Bearing false witness is lying to cause damage or hurt to another. It is perjuring oneself in a court or official document, lying about someone as in false gossip, etc. It is lying to someone else’s hurt. If someone ask me if I am feeling alright and I say yes even though I feel horrible, it may not be the truth but it is not bearing false witness. If the Nazis come to my house asking if I have any Jews hidden in the wall and I say no, even though there are, this is not being a false witness. Your lie did not hurt the Nazis nor anyone else.

“Thou shalt not bear false witness” is correct as is.
