If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

Matthew 10:37-38 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
The meaning is clear and obvious, Christ Jesus has to be first in your life or you are not worthy of him and the sacrifice he made to save you from your sins. God has to come first.
Matthew 10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
He that lives a life without Christ will lose life, he that gives up his life for Christ will find life.
1 John 5:12 KJV He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
It is a rather recurring theme in the Scriptures. If God is not first in your life, God is not in your life. He will not take second place. Anything, whether person, purpose, or desire, above God is an idol.
